The American Conservative Union and Civitas awarded me the Defender of Liberty award and a high "conservative effectiveness" rating, respectively.
I served as the primary sponsor or co-sponsor for many bills that will help improve the economy, education, and public health and safety. You can review many of the bills below.
Restore Confidence in Government
Co-sponsor - Voter Photo ID - A bill that would require voters to provide valid photo IDs before voting. Unfortunately, the governor vetoed the bill, but it is still eligible for reconsideration.
Public Health and Safety
Primary Sponsor - Laura's Law - A law to crack down on habitual drunk drivers.
Primary Sponsor - Safe Students Act - A law to require parents and/or guardians to provide proof of age when enrolling a student in a school for the first time.
Second Amendment
Primary Sponsor - Castle Doctrine - A law to allow law-abiding citizens to defend themselves against violent criminals.
Illegal Immigration
Co-sponsor - E-Verify Compliance - A law to require counties, cities, and employers to use the federal E-verify program to verify the work authorization of newly hired employees.
Life
Co-sponsor - Unborn Victims of Violence Act - A law that provides for murderers of pregnant women to be charged with the crimes of killing the mother and the unborn baby.
Marriage
Co-sponsor - We voted to place a constitutional amendment on the May 2011 ballot. This amendment will define marriage as between one man and one woman.
Fiscal Conservatism
Primary Sponsor - Transfer Surplus Property to Retirement System - A law to encourage the disposition of government-owned property.
Banking
Primary Sponsor - Payable on Death Accounts - A law to establish an account naming an entity other than a natural person as beneficiary.
Veterans
I voted to honor the dedication of the North Carolina Veterans Park; I am a primary sponsor of a bill to increase penalties for those who disrupt the funerals of fallen heroes.
General Contractor Laws
Primary Sponsor - We improved and clarified sections of the general contractor laws.
